Day 7- Zugspritze

We hit the tallest mountain in Germany today! It was absolutely gorgeous out- nice and sunny and in the low 70's. It was just what we needed after a couple days of rain and 50 degree temps!

We took advantage of the weather and went up to the Zugspritze incase it started to cloud over in the following days.

The Zugspritze can be seen from Edelweiss. it's the largest peak in the pictures below. It's only a 5 minute drive by car to the base of the hill or you can also take a train from Garmisch station.

There are two ways up and down the peak. You can take an old cograil train or a speedy cable car. It's $68/adult round trip (if you buy your ticket in the Edelweiss gift shop. I believe it's pretty comparable if you buy them at the actual ticket counter but you avoid standing in line) no matter which way you go. We took the cable car up and the train back down. Bring jackets as it's obviously 40 degrees cooler way up there!!
There's a set of restaurants and little souvenir shops at the top, but the main attraction is the large gold cross at the top. You must leave the man made metal bridges and railings to climb by rope up to the peak to reach it. With our two kids, we decided to pass! As a mother, I had horrible visions of my children falling off the mountain down the extremely steep slope and felt like I had to sit down. Even D felt a little uneasy up there! It is very safe though but just so incredibly high up in the clouds! The views are breathtaking and worth the steep price to get up there. It's a once in a life time experience.

We had some traditional Bavarian food (pretzels, apple streussel, sausages) and of course, a beer. In the Bavaria region, beer is referred to as the "Bavarian beverage" everywhere. I can't stand the taste but my parents and D had lots of fun trying the different brews.

We came home and ate some dinner at the resort. It was chinese food night at the buffet and I don't honestly recommend it. The stuff wasn't fresh, the eggrolls weren't crisp at all, etc. You get the idea. For $15.95 you'd do better downstairs on chinese night. Each night the buffet has a different theme.. some were better than others. The thing is.. the restaurants are open on different evenings so pay attention to when that is!

We are absolutely loving Germany and the green lush landscape at this point. The outdoor activity possibilities seem endless and it was such a fantastic time. We really want to go back!! On day 8 we will visit Valerie's favorite, the castle.
P.S. There is a picture of Derrick and I up top somewhere but I can't find it on this computer so I'll post it with the next post.
